CHIEF SENATOR ASUELIMEN OSAZEE AIREWELE- FACTS – BIOGRAPHY
Chief Senator Asuelimen Osazee Airewele (1916 – 1989) was a Nigerian nationalist and statesman born at Igor in 1916, Ekpoma Okpevbole Local Government Area (now Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State)
PASSION FOR EDUCATION
He started his career as a tutor in both academic and commercial subjects after he left the Elementary School. Later he majored in Book-keeping and Accountancy.
In 1939, he taught book-keeping and Accountancy at Onitsha Commercial Institute where he was nicked named “ACCOUNT MADE EASY” because of his excellent teaching when all the students were getting 100%.
In 1943, he came to Benin to establish Commercial Training College with some philanthropic people; afterwards, in 1947, He single-handedly established Western Boys High School, in Benin city. Through dint of hard work and great commitment in the field of school management in the secondary section of the school, he became an indisputable consultant and made chairman for both private and voluntary agency schools in the state. In 1971, he acted as a consultant to many secondary schools proprietors in many states after he was invited by the Ministry of Education Benin city to advise them how to manage the school without riot and with wonderful progress.
POLITICS AND POST HELD
Between 1956 – 1960, he was a Councillor at Ekpoma in Esan Division.
In 1962, he was appointed a member of the Board of Governors of the Akure Agricultural College, Akure to represent the state because of his efficiency in the school management. In 1963, he was the Initiator of the wonderful symbol “BLACK and WHITE” which was used for the historic plebiscite for the creation of the then MIDWEST REGION. With this singular initiative, he was admired by everybody in the region and in the following year (1964), he was unanimously recommended for the Senatorial appointment by the then leaders of the state.
In the house of parliament, he distinguishes himself honourably and creditably but for the coup that took place in early 1966, the then Western Region would have paid the debt they were owing the state for the share of the common assets: His suggestion on how the debts would have been paid as agreed upon by the former Prime Minister – Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. From 1970 to 1983 he has been serving as a committee member in advising both private and government institutions, for example, he was one of the directors of the New Nigeria Bank, Benin city, appointed twice as a member of Rent Tribunal, Benin city as well as a first commissioner for Local Government Services Commission, the work he did honourably up to 30th \September 1983 when the government of Late Ambrose Alli handed over.
TITLE HELD
He was conferred with the title the AYOBAHAN OF IGOR by the Onogie of Ekpoma in 1966.
LEGACY
In all of his many achievements, the founding of Western Boys High School stands out. An all-boys school with the sole aim of educating and imparting better ideals and knowledge for the betterment of man and the nation. The school boasts of prominent personalities as its & quot; old boys & quot;, among whom are; One of the most respected Governors of old Bendel state now Edo and Delta state Late Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin, Prof.Oshodin, the former UNIBEN VC, Prof. Orumwense, the former Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Prof Aigbomian, Prof. (Sir) Victor Uwaifo and so many others too numerous to mention.
The Initiator of BLACK AND WHITE Symbol for the historic plebiscite for the creation of the then MIDWEST REGION.
A staunch member of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). Many still talk about his contributions towards the emergence of late Prof. Ambrose Alli, Governor of the old Bendel State.
